SPECIAL EXHIBITION
Harlem Renaissance
Discover works from the groundbreaking exhibition The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism, which explores the comprehensive and far-reaching ways in which Black artists portrayed everyday modern life.

About the Artwork

The Green Blouse, 1919. Pierre Bonnard. Oil on canvas. The Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ittleson Jr. Purchase Fund, 1963. © 2019 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York.
This painting captures a scene the artist must often have observed. His longtime companion and future wife, Marthe (Maria Boursin), is seated at a table laden with dishes and a fruit bowl. The profile of an attendant or maid is visible at the left. Although Marthe was in her fifties at the time, she appears as ageless as she always does in Bonnard's paintings.
