Abstract composition from the portfolio Motivos, 1936. Carlos Mérida. Color woodcut. Gift of Jean Charlot, 1938. © 2024 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / SOMAAP, Mexico City.
Mérida was part of the Mexican muralist movement and one of the first artists to fuse European modern painting with Latin American themes. This print is from a portfolio entitled Motivos published by Ediciones Arte Mexicano in 1936, when Mérida was strongly influenced by European Surrealism. The three prints reveal an imaginatively blended abstract and figurative elements that the artist prefered to narrative compositions. The prints have a lyrical quality that reflects his lifelong interest in music, dance, and rhythm.
